What to buy and not buy in March

Rita Red Coat MG_2661As the weather warms up in March, you’ll find great deals on frozen food, outerwear, and more. Offers.com offers a guide on what to buy, and not buy, in March to help consumers save money this spring.

Below are items that are bargains and ones that will cost you more:

What to buy

  • Frozen food. March 2016 is the 33rd annual National Frozen Food Month. In honor of the holiday, many grocers and supermarkets will offer coupons and discounts on frozen foods.
  • Luggage. As new luggage models are released in May, many retailers begin to discount older luggage to make room for new merchandise in March.
  • Winter gear. Buy new coats, gloves, scarves, and mittens now to get ready for winter in November.
  • Jewelry. Lacking major gift-giving holidays such as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day, March offers deals on jewelry. Keep an eye out for jewelry sales throughout the month, and you could save as much as 60 percent on fine and fashion earrings, rings, bracelets, and other jewelry items.
  • Valentine’s merchandise. By March, most stores cleared their shelves of Valentine’s merchandise. Any remaining candy, cards, decorations, and other love day-themed gifts may be discounted up to 80 percent. Take the opportunity to stock up on Valentine’s Day gifts and gear for next year, and enjoy chocolates, heart-shaped sour gummies, and candy roses at their lowest prices of the season.

What not to buy

  • Appliances. March is among the worst months to buy refrigerators, washer-dryer sets, dishwashers, and other appliances. Wait until September, when manufacturers release new models and slash the prices of last year’s models.
  • TVs. Low prices on TVs usually occur two times a year: right after the NFL championship game and during Black Friday sales.
  • Vacuum cleaners. April and May are when you often see the best sales on vacuum cleaners. Hold off one more month on making your purchase, and you could buy a vacuum cleaner for a great price.
  • Spring apparel. As your favorite stores begin selling spring styles, you may be tempted to splurge on a new warm-weather wardrobe. However, spring clothes usually have higher price tags during March; the best spring apparel deals won’t occur until end of the season.
