What baby boomers are up to in retirement

USDA Secretary Perdue Eats With School Children

USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue, who says chocolate milk made him as big as he is today, eats lunch with kids at Catoctin Elementary School in Leesburg, Virginia, as part of his announcement on reducing nutritional standards for school lunches

Sometimes retirement gets a bad name, so Tom Sightings of Sightings Over Sixty decided to write about “Eight Things He Loves About Retirement.” Maybe you know a few more reasons why retirement isn’t so much the end of a career, but the beginning of a new life.

For me, I took an early retirement from my job as a planner and editor for a state agency. Why? To become a consumer blogger. Its been a fun eight years, but lately, I’m getting bogged down by so much depressing consumer news as the Trump administration works to dismantle policies and regulations that help consumers.

I knew about the U.S. Department of Agriculture action to reduce nutrition regulations for school lunches. I wasn’t going to write about it, thinking I had more significant consumer issues to cover, until I received a news release in my email. It was called “Ag Secretary Perdue Moves to Make School Meals Great Again.” I was absolutely appalled that a federal agency would use Trump’s misleading and offensive campaign slogan in its efforts to slash nutritional standards for school lunches.

Then Perdue’s announced the reduced nutrition standards at a school and was quoted as saying, “I wouldn’t be as big as I am today without chocolate milk.”

Unbelievable, so I decided to write about the reduced nutritional standards. The standards adopted during the Obama administration aimed to reduce childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Now school districts can decide to discontinue the use of whole grains in their school lunch program and also increase salt and serve chocolate and other flavored milk.

There are dozens more crazy actions the Trump administration is making, so, although it’s depressing, I’ll continue to write about them.

Here’s what other boomer bloggers in our blogging group are up to in retirement:

Meryl Baer of Six Decades and Counting loves eating, and especially enjoys eating out. Any meal she doesn’t cook is, most of the time, a great meal. Brunch with a friend at a diner got her thinking about the history of these iconic establishments. Read about her musings at “About Diners.”

How many of you are fascinated with dating behavior? It took Laura Lee Carter of the Adventures of the New Old Farts decades of dating to finally “find the one” at age 49. By the way, Carter connected with her first husband through the Boulder Camera, a newspaper, and by letter back in 1992.

Robert Frost was a man of words. Carol Cassara over at Heart·Mind·Soul shares that he's also a man of a few, carefully chosen ones. See her article “Death. And Life” for details.
