It’s a huge recall that’s making the front pages of newspapers as well as TV newscasts.
I saw the blender when I was shopping at Costco and considered buying it. My old blender gave out, so I’m making smoothies in my food processor, which takes time to clean. However, I usually check out appliance purchases at Consumer Reports, so I skipped the impulse purchase. I’m glad I didn’t buy it.
About 4.8 million of the BlendJet 2 portable blenders are being recalled in the United States with an additional 117,000 in Canada.
The recalled blenders can overheat or catch fire and the blades can break off, posing fire and laceration risks.
The company has received about 329 reports of the blades breaking during use, and an additional 17 reports of overheating or fires resulting in property damage claims of about $150,000. The firm has received about 49 reports of minor burns and one report of a laceration injury.
Sold in a variety of colors and designs, the recalled blenders have serial numbers printed on the bottom of the base along with “blendjet2” and “The Original Portable Blender.”
Units with the first 4 digits of the serial number between 5201-5542 are being recalled.
The blenders were sold at Costco, Walmart, Target, and other stores nationwide and online at BlendJet.com from October 2020 through November 2023. The cost was between $50 and $75.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled blenders and contact BlendJet for a free replacement, the company and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advise. Consumers need to remove and cut the rubber seal from the base of their blender into three or more pieces.
They are then asked to upload or email a photo showing the serial number on the bottom of the unit and its rubber seal in pieces to BlendJet at www.blendjet.com/safetyandrecall or safety@blendjet.com to receive a free replacement base.
Consumers can identify whether they have a recalled blender by entering the serial number of it into the “Is my BlendJet 2 Recalled?” tool located at www.blendjet.com/safetyandrecall, or by calling BlendJet at 844-334-0562.
