The location and the food are the main factors that can make one place an ideal vacation spot. Aside from the goal of relaxation, these two factors beckon tourists to travel to different places.
And after a long time of planning, you finally bought the ticket for your break. But there is a problem – you want to enjoy your vacation but you worry about your weight. Will you drop the plan of going on vacation because you’re afraid of returning home a few pounds heavier?
Well, don’t give up just yet. You can still eat healthy while on vacation. The following tips offer advice on how to maximize your vacation without compromising your health:
1. Feast with your eyes, not always with your mouth.
Although there’s that strong temptation to stuff your mouth full of food, this is a big no-no. Instead of gulping down big servings of everything, you need to learn to control yourself with little servings at a time. One trip to the buffet table should to be enough. Divert your hunger for food with the beauty of your surroundings. Bask in the radiance of nature and appreciate the places you visit.
But be careful not to starve yourself. Eat little, but eat enough, because your body still needs those nutrients and calories for energy. Also allow yourself to sample local delicacies in small amounts. Don’t deprive yourself of this treat because after all, the main aim of your vacation is to unwind.
2. Let the water flow.
Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids during your vacation. You need to hydrate every now and then. You must replenish all the water you lost while walking and travelling. Water and juice not only prevent dehydration but will also keep you in better shape. Frequent drinking of water can also minimize your food intake because doing so can cause the feeling of being full.
Always bring a bottle of water with you wherever you go. It saves you the trouble of looking for a drink, especially when you’re in an isolated area.
3. Don’t skip breakfast.
Even if you’re in a new place, you shouldn’t forget the most important meal of the day. Before you can start your adventure, eat breakfast. It will give you the fresh supply of energy you need for the day ahead. It will also prevent or lessen unnecessary snacking in between meals.
But skip the cereals and greasy food, and start your day with a healthier alternative, such as quinoa or oatmeal. You can also eat fruits or the local produce of your destination.
4. Inspect the menu.
Before ordering anything, check the menu carefully. You can indulge yourself with the restaurant’s best sellers, but if possible, choose dishes that offer a healthier choice. Just because it’s your vacation doesn’t mean you can disregard your health. You shouldn’t forget fruits and vegetables even when you’re on holiday. As much as possible, try to keep your meals well balanced, with the right amount of fiber, protein, and other nutrients.
Remember that most of the time, it’s not the ingredients or the way the food was prepared that can get your diet in trouble. It’s the amount of your food eat. Even if you selected only one dish but asked for second or third servings, your health – and figure – can still be in trouble.
The bottom line: How you eat and how much you eat are key to keeping your diet intact. It’s fine to indulge in good food, but going on vacation doesn’t mean you can cheat on eating healthy. Heed these four tips for eating healthy while on vacation – doing so will not only keep you in tip-top shape during your trip but will also aid in your well-being in the long run.
