Late Sunday afternoon, I remembered I wanted to go to the Thurston County Fair to take photos.
I took photos of the animals, exhibits, and carnival rides.
It reminded me of going to the fair when I was a kid.
I remember canning peaches and entering them in the fair. I won a blue ribbon. Going on the rides also was fun.
One time, my sister and I had our photo taken in the “Wenatchee City Jail.”
What interested you most about the county fair when you were growing up?
Were you part of a farm family? Did you raise chickens, rabbits, pigs, or sheep? Did you sew and enter your work for judging?
Or were you a city kid who learned a lot about farm animals and how food is grown?
See my article “Have You Ever Lived on a Farm or Would You Like to?” for more on the memories going to the fair triggered for me.

Great picture! I always liked eating scones, doing those spinning art pictures, getting to pick out a little glass figurine to take home, and of course the rides and games. One time is college I won a gold fish and he lived for 2 years after getting over the shock of the fair.
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for your report on what you enjoyed at the county fair. I remember winning a gold fish, too. I think in those days we took it home in a small glass bowl. Later they put them in plastic bags.
Isn’t that photo something? I think I was in junior high.

I like the photo also. Before I looked at the post I thought it was one of those where you are behind a board and just stick your head through, but it is all for real!
Hi Mona,
Yes, it’s a great photo. I’m glad I could find it to post. It was in my high school scrap book. About five years ago, I ordered large archival pages and a big scrapbook you can insert pages into. So I was able to preserve it.

My parents won ribbons for their dahlias in the Spokane County Fair. Watching which flowers had the potential for entry beforehand was a lot of fun.
I like county fairs because they are all about real people.
Hi Sue,
Yes, your dad was the Dahlia King wasn’t he.
I’ll send you the photos of the flowers I took at the fair. I have some that may be the Japanese style that you like.
