What were your best and worst consumer experiences this week?

Which consumer happenings cheered you this week and which ones made you want to scream or weep?

Here are my best and worst consumer experiences this week:

My best: Getting historic family photos scanned

Minor Rita Myrna and Marlene Slingsby 1941

A few months ago, I paid $50 to Ritz Cameras to get 500 photos scanned. Before Christmas, I submitted 50 of our most famous family photos so I could give disks of the photos to my sister, daughters, and nieces. This week I rounded up 450 more.

Then I got lucky. When I brought the photos in, Ritz was having another sale. I’m organizing 500 more photos for scanning.

It’s so much fun to look at family photos from 1930 to 1960. It brought back memories of my parents and other relatives and growing up in rural areas of Eastern Washington.

My worst: Huge hike in Visa fees

Madrid Prado Renoir Sign

In the fourth quarter of 2010, credit card giant Visa’s revenue worldwide rose 14 percent to $2.24 billion, compared with $1.96 billion in the prior-year quarter.

I can see why. Instead of paying 1 percent for credit card transactions, the Visa fee has jumped to a $2.50 minimum fee for overseas transactions.

I was stunned to find this out when I traveled to Madrid. I went to Prado Museum – a $2.50 charge to use my credit card. A lunch break at the Prado – another $2.50 charge.

I didn’t receive any notification about this increase.

I’m furious. I’m going to call Visa and complain.

  1. Hi! I just saw your comments about your trip to Spain. It caught my eye becuase I live in Madrid.
So, I promise that this is not spam and I don’t work for USAA, but I wanted to tell you that before I moved here, I switched all of my banking to USAA, which is considered a bank for veterans, etc, but anyone can use it.
Anyway, I traveled for years with my USSA credit and debit cards and there are no fees! Even if you withdrawl an ammount from another bank that charges you a fee, USAA will reimburse you. It is great for traveling. I got my bag stolen here when I first moved here and the customer service was really helpful.
So, again, I don’t work there, its just that cc fees really make me angry! I just tried to book a flight online and the company wanted 7 euros just to use my credit card! We had to do a bank transfer instead- Really drives me nuts!
Anyway, I hope your trip to Madrid was great despite all the cc fees!

    So, that
