Since it’s cold and chilly, I decided to have beef stew for New Year’s dinner. Living in the Seattle area, it’s often chilly and rainy here, even sometimes in the summer.
I’m thinking about the people who live in the Northeast today. They’re having a big snow storm. I grew up in Central Washington where we had severe winter weather. I was remembering how it felt all winter to be dodging the snow storms.
I’m also thinking about my mom, as the New Year unfolds. She like to put parsnips and rutabagas in her stews. I prefer turnips, so my New Year’s stew had turnips, broccoli, and green beans. Although I don’t mind parnships and rutabagas in stews, my family didn’t like them. Those two vegetables add a nice strong flavor to the stew, even more than turnips.
When my kids were older, I often made Crab Newburg for New Year’s dinner. One year, I got tired of cracking the crab. Then later, I wanted a less fattening choice.
Since my hemoglobin A1C test was up again, I tried to eat well and lose weight over the holidays. With a doctor’s appointment Monday, we’ll see how that worked.

Happy New Year one and all.
