About eight years ago, I figured out Republicans hate poor people. Now, it looks like they're going to adopt policies that will increase the number of poor people substantially.
One of my big concerns after the Trump election is for older Americans, since I’m one myself. Paul Ryan, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, wants to do away with Medicare and cut Social Security.
Millions of older Americans are barely getting by with the Social Security and Medicare they currently have. When Social Security is cut and Medicare abolished, they won’t be able to afford housing, food, and health care.
Where will they go? My dad used to talk about going to the Poor House if we’d run out of money. I had a friend who said her father, when he was a county commissioner, would take people to the Poor House years ago.
Now, Ryan won’t want the government to build Poor Houses. That would cost money. So older adults will join the homeless in already overcrowded shelters and on the streets. What a way to spend your retirement.
Of course, the poor will become poorer under the new Republican Administration. Already reduced public assistance programs will be slashed ever more. Millions more will be homeless in shelters and on the streets.
The Middle Class? We’ll be having a recession soon. As American consumers are pushed out of the Middle Class due to the loss of jobs, they’ll be joining others in homeless in shelters and on the streets.
Veterans? Republicans want to privatize care for veterans. Not only would privatization increase costs, it would reduce access because all veterans, even those covered by employer plans, could get any service covered through any doctor or hospital with the federal government paying for it. With the reduced ability to get treatment, veterans may be less able to work or have stable lives.
The day after the election, General Motors announced it would lay off 2,000 workers, the first in six years. Millions will be laid off, as I wrote recently, with a recession coming in about two years.
It’s hard to understand why Americans vote for Republicans, because they’re so against consumers and everyday Americans. Trickle down economics doesn’t work. We learned that under Ronald Reagan. Cut regulations and make government smaller, then the corporations go wild with gouging consumers.
This year is especially bad. Donald Trump told so many lies, and he kept repeating them even after they were fact checked as lies.
So, enough Americans bought the Trump lies to get him elected under the Electoral College. Instead of him fading into oblivion as I’d hoped, I’ll have to listen to him for a couple of more years.
The thing that’s so difficult to take is that the Republicans stole the election. Through voter suppression, they kept enough Democrats from voting so that they wouldn’t win in swing states.
The NAACP filed suit in federal court on Monday against the North Carolina State Board of Elections, arguing that state officials in at least three counties have canceled thousands of voter registrations. A small number of individuals challenged the registration of about 4,500 voters based only on mass mailings that were returned as undeliverable, according to a CNN article. Most of those disenfranchised were African Americans.
In addition, Republicans have practicing voter suppression in dozens of states across the nation.
Trump lied to Americans to get them to vote for him. To help him and other Republicans, the Republican Party got voters removed from the voter rolls and used other methods of voter suppression.
Not exactly fair play.
