On Sept. 11, 2001, I was in Madrid visiting my daughter. When I learned about the attacks by terrorists on American soil, I knew things would never be the same again in my lifetime.
Today, I went to a 9-11 remembrance offered by the City of Tumwater, Wash. After the ceremony, the public participated in the city’s annual event – Tumwater Community Day.
City departments had booths and the Public Works, Fire, and Police departments brought their vehicles. Children climbed in and out of the vehicles, assisted by their parents.
Soldiers from the Joint Base Lewis-McCord Stryker Brigade were there with their vehicles.
Music played. There were games for children.
Free hotdogs, popcorn, and drinks were served.
The Stream Team served a multi-layered soda pop, ice cream, and chocolate sprinkles drink that was to resemble the layers of sediment over groundwater.
The Tumwater Historical Society helped kids make rope, the old-fashioned way.
At first, all the activity seemed jarring on a day of remembrance. But then, it began to feel comforting. Life is about working on healing and going forward.
The soldiers were a reminder of the response that the U.S. government made after 9-11, and that the country is fighting two wars as a result.
Community Day ended at 1 p.m. Those gathered went home after remembering and sharing community.
