Oprah offering discounted DVDs of ‘Food Inc.’

After writing about the documentary film “Food Inc.” in my last post, it was great to turn on the TV and see Oprah and Michael Pollan discussing the movie today on The Oprah Show.

IMG_1048_2 Pollan – a journalist, professor, and author of five books, including “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” – said he eats about anything, as long as it’s real food. His advice on eating is “Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much.”

Pollan’s ideas are collected in an eater's manual, “Food Rules.” Among his guidelines to good eating are:

1. Eat food.

2. Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.

7. Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader can’t pronounce.

13. Eat only foods that will eventually rot.

39. Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.

"It's not that hard to eat well if you're willing to put a little more time into it, a little more thoughtfulness into it and, yes, a little bit more money," he said on the show.

You can get a discounted copy of “Food Inc.” by going to Oprah’s Web site and clicking on “Food Inc. is available on DVD” ($9.99) under Related Resources or by clicking on the Amazon ad at the top of the right hand column of this blog ($10.17, new; from $7.48, used).

Oprah advised her audience to not just rent “Food Inc.” but to buy a copy for their DVD libraries. I agree. It’s a terrific movie, pulling aside the curtain that hides how food is really grown and processed in America.

  1. Thank you for having Michael Pollan on your show and promoting Food Inc. We are a grassroots non profit organization called One World Spokane who operates a local organic restaurant which makes organic food available to all through volunteering, reducing food waste and serving food with no set menu in season. We consider ourselves local, healthy food advocates who work with and within our community. We would like to see this concept grow nationwide.
