An underwater scooter is a handheld, motorized device that helps you move through the water with minimal effort. Powered by an electric motor, it propels you forward, pulling you along while you’re snorkeling, diving, or swimming in a pool.
Sublue is recalling about 40,370 black lithium-ion batteries found in underwater scooters because they can overheat and ignite.
Sublue has received 161 reports of thermal and swelling incidents involving the lithium-ion batteries, including eight reports of fire, one report of injury, and two reports of property damage totaling $651,400.
The recall applies only to scooters with black batteries. The scooters were sold in arctic white, space blue, and aqua blue. They have “Sublue” printed on the top and “Whiteshark Mix Underwater Scooter” printed on the side. The battery compartment is located on the underside of the scooter.
The underwater scooters were sold online at www.amazon.com, www.costco.com, www.sublue.com, www.westmarine.com, and other websites from June 2018 through February 2025. The cost was about $550 for the scooters and $150 for replacement batteries.
Consumers should stop using their scooters immediately and contact Sublue for a gray replacement battery, the company and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advise. Sublue will provide consumers with a replacement kit for them to return the battery. When it’s received, a replacement battery will be sent.
The commission reminds consumers to not throw the recalled battery in the trash or in used battery recycling boxes at retail and home improvement stores. It needs to be disposed of at a municipal recycling center that takes lithium batteries.
