If you’re a baby boomer who needs to work additional years because of the recession and it’s dramatic financial implications, you may want to consider finding a job where you can make a contribution locally or nationally.
One place to examine options is Encore.org. It offers services for people who want the personal fulfillment of giving back, along with continued income.
Encore.org provides news, resources, and connections for individuals looking for "encore careers" that combine social contribution, personal meaning, and financial security.
People in encore careers help improve health care, educate the next generation, protect the environment, and undertake other meaningful work.
Here are other Web sites that offer assistance in finding encore jobs:
Bridgestar
Civic Ventures
Partnership for Public Service
RetirementJobs.com
Idealist
Common Good Careers
Executive Service Corps
Retired Brains
Retirement Living Information Center
Another resource, “Boomers Find Way To Make Social Impact, Money,” a story on National Public Radio, offers information on boomers who are looking for positions that combine income and personal meaning with social impact.
Marc Freedman book “Encore” also provides valuable information. Freedman is working to create a blueprint and tools for baby boomers who want to spend their later years productively. Freedman’s Web site is Civic Ventures.
Another book is "The Boomers' Guide to Good Work" by Ellen Freudenheim.

Working longer is a good thing..For retirement for some people is just taking care of the many issues that we face today …with technology..It is difficult to purchase phones, computers and TVs without an expert to install…Anyway back to the subject..work is always good. ANd no job is menial if it helps pay the bills
Carol,
Encore jobs do seem like they’d be a good choice for boomers who are retiring. It’s a way to contribute to the community or the nation, while at the same time earning money. With the recession, I know things are changing for many people.
