When I was growing up, we had two pairs of shoes a year. A white pair for summer and a dark-colored pair for winter. We polished our shoes to keep them in good shape.
In the photo above, that’s my sister on the left with her white shoes. I’m next to her, also wearing white shoes.
Do you polish your shoes, or do you just buy another pair when they get scuffed?
These days, many people simply discard their shoes when they begin looking a bit worn. The Great Recession, however, is returning some consumers to shoe polishing routines.
Shoe repair also is up, reports the Guardian article: “How to Rediscover the Lost Art of Shoe Care.”
You can extend the life of your shoes and keep them looking new if you polish them once a week, and every time they get dirty or wet; allow them to dry first. Regular polishing also makes them more water-resistant.
This topic has come up because I have a pair of red shoes that I really like. I didn’t buy any red shoe polish because I don’t like the smell of shoe polish very much. Now I can’t find any. I guess I’ll have to try the Internet.

The initiative to conserve an old pair of shoes is imperative. Too many people throw away their old shoes, instead of just polishing them and giving them a makeover. I’m in favor of preserving the old.
Excellent tips and a great article. Nicely done!
