Consumer Reports relaunches newsletter from the 1940s to help people save money, spend less

“Bread & Butter,” a newsletter on Substack, is being relaunched by Consumer Reports, a consumer testing and advocacy organization. It’s a free, weekly that focuses on helping people save money and spend less.

Written by Yasmeen Khan, a multimedia journalist who has covered the mechanics of modern living, “Bread & Butter” brings back part of Consumer Report’s 90-year history for a new generation.

The newsletter was first published by Consumer Reports in 1941 to help cash-strapped Americans make smart decisions with limited resources.

“Many of the issues people face today are similar to the ones they faced when CR was founded – high prices, questionable claims, and lack of trust,” Jen Shecter, vice president of content at Consumer Reports said in a statement. “Bread & Butter leans into these top-of-mind concerns.”

“Bread & Butter” will be sent every Wednesday, starting Nov. 26.

Consumer Reports also has other newsletters on a range of topics from health to safety to pocketbook issues that are available to paid members.

It also recently launched “Talking Carts,” a weekly podcast also focused on money-saving tips for smarter shopping. You can find it on Apple and Spotify.
