One hundred years ago, women in Washington state were granted the right to vote.
Olympia residents recently marked the anniversary at the community’s annual Lakefair celebration.
About 50 residents dresses as suffragettes and enlightened men of the Golden West marched in the Lakefair Parade. Some rode in antique cars provided by the Olympia Region Horseless Carriage Club of America.
I took photos and had a great time.
An exhibit – Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices – is traveling throughout the state and now is in Yakima. The exhibit highlights the history of the struggle to attain women’s right to vote in Washington state.
Many suffrage events have been held and more are planned.
A Day of Jubilation is scheduled for Nov. 8, the date the actual vote took place 100 years ago, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.at the Capitol in Olympia. A day of events, exhibits, performances, activities, and celebrations is being planned by the Women’s History Consortium and the state Secretary of State’s Office.
Washington state was the fifth state in the nation to garner suffrage. It was a turning point in the national campaign.
Update: The Women’s Votes, Women’s Voices exhibit is now at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. The final day is Oct. 3. It’s a great exhibit, well worth seeing for state residents and visitors to Seattle.
