BMW of North America is recalling 1.4 million cars and SUVs because they may catch fire.

The first recall includes more than 741,000 vehicles. Included are 2008-11 BMW 1 series, 2007-2011 3 series, 5 series, X3, X5, and Z4.

The heater for the PCV valve may short circuit, causing the parts in the valve to melt and increasing the risk of a fire, even when the vehicle isn’t in use.

BMW said it's not aware of any related accidents or injuries related to these recalled vehicles.

The second recall includes about 673,000 vehicles. Included are the 2006-2011 BMW 3 series and M3.

Faulty wiring for the heating and air conditioning system could overheat, causing the electrical connectors to melt and increasing the risk of fire, even when the vehicle is parked.

BMW said it has received four incident reports related to this recall, including reports of three injuries.

The recall notifications are expected to begin on Dec. 18, the company said.

For more information, vehicle owners can call BMW customer service at 800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit NHTSA’s website to check their vehicle identification number.
