Best wishes on Memorial Day

Memorial Day 2018

On the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day, it's a good day to remember the men and women who have served our country.

Some possible activities include:

  • Visit a cemetery and place a flag or flowers on veterans’ graves.
  • Visit war memorials.
  • Fly the U.S. flag.
  • Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. to pause and think about the meaning of Memorial Day and listen to the taps being played.
  • Volunteer with a local veterans’ group or organization or attend an event.
  • Donate to a charity that helps veterans.

People donate more than $2.5 billion every year to more than 40,000 American charities with military-related missions.

Which charities do a good job helping veterans?

Every year during Military Appreciation Month in May, Charity Navigator prepares list of highly-rated organizations that provide a variety of services from lifting troops’ morale to offering financial assistance for food, rent, utilities, and medical expenses. All of the organizations demonstrate financial responsibility and a commitment to accountability and transparency best practices, according to Charity Navigator.

Some of the organizations include:

  • The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) Charitable Service Trust
  • Hire Heroes USA
  • Homes For Our Troops
  • Give an Hour
  • Hope For The Warriors
