Are you about done pruning your rhododendrons?

Fortunately, or unfortunately, I have 40 rhododendrons in my yard. For some reason, the former owners planted that many along with 12 azaleas.

It’s a challenge each year to get them pruned. This year, my two helpers weren’t available so I’m out there myself pruning and pruning. The clippings are piling up as the photo shows.

Fortunately, a friend came and helped prune the tops of the tall ones on the backyard so I won’t need to use a ladder.

I like to get my rhododendrons pruned by the end of June. I’ve found that if I prune them in July when it’s often very hot, they can get droopy.

If you’re new to pruning rhododendrons, see my article “How to Prune Rhododendrons.”

My main tips are:

  • Make spaces between your rhododendrons.
  • Don’t let the plants touch your house or fence.
  • Cut the branches off just before some leaves.

Best wishes with your pruning. I hope it’s going well.
