Thank you to American workers who are the heart and soul of this country, keeping its businesses and industries running and our country economically strong.
While the nation’s workforce should be applauded and supported, President Trump is doing just the opposite.
Although Trump said in his Labor Day proclamation that he’s doing great things for American workers, he’s is doing just the opposite.
Last week, he canceled contracts with unions that represent scientists, engineers, and other staff at NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Patent Office, and the International Trade Administration. Earlier he canceled contracts with unions that represented 400,000 employees at the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Health, Human Services, and other departments.
The number of workers whose union contracts Trump has canceled now is more than 1 million, according to an article in The American Prospect, a news magazine and website.
About 300,000 federal workers will lose their jobs by the end of 2025, according to an article in The New York Times. The cuts represent about 12.5 percent of the 4.4 million workers in the federal government when Trump took office in January.
In addition to the upheaval Trump is causing for federal employees, his policies are having major negative impacts for workers throughout America.
Trumps tariffs are going to cost American families more than $3,500 a year.
In addition, reduced government regulations will cost consumers more money as Trump’s appointees halt actions and lawsuits by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The Trump administration is even trying to eliminate the agency, which corporations have complained about because it takes action against their anticonsumer and illegal practices.
Health protections are also being reduced as the Trump administration slashes rules and enforcement actions by the Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, and Department of Agriculture.
Add to that the chaos at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Food borne illnesses and communicable diseases are likely to increase soon. The only question is how bad will they be.
Then there are cut to Medicaid, the possible closing of rural hospitals, the weakening of health coverage under the Affordable Care Act, and cuts to mental health and substance use services programs.
The list goes on and on.
American workers and citizens have great power. The power needs to be used to reverse these harmful policies of the Trump administration.
