Several months ago, I got a call from a guy who said he had information that my network was having problems.
Normally, I just hang up, but I have WiFi so I thought he might know something about it. We talked about 10 minutes, and I wouldn’t give him remote control of my computer.
I asked for phone numbers to check out his firm. He gave me two phone numbers; one was the customer service number for Best Buy and the other was an unworkable number.
The latest scam shut down by the Federal Trade Commission tricked consumers into paying hundreds of dollars for technical support services they didn’t need and sold them free software.
If strangers call offering technical assistance and urge you to give them remote control of your computer, hang up. In addition to paying hundreds of dollars for nothing, a scammer could add viruses or malware to your computer.
