As the old song goes, “Silver and gold, silver and gold, everyone wishes for silver and gold.”

That rings especially true now that we’re smack in the middle of the gift-giving season. If you’re looking for that special little something, jewelry might do the trick. But, do you know whether you’re buying a trinket or a treasure?

If you’re on the hunt for holiday glitz, keep in mind these pearls of wisdom:

Rock your research. Compare quality, price, and service from several different retailers. Consider asking family members, friends, or co-workers for recommendations. If you’re unfamiliar with a seller, check its reputation by doing an online search. Enter the seller’s name and the words “complaint” or “review” in a search engine. If you’re shopping at a brick-and-mortar spot, ask your salesperson to write down any information you might rely on to make your purchase. And, before you plunk down your money, ask for the store's refund and return policy.

Learn the lingo. Gold and silver jewelry have a vocabulary all their own. Some terms, such as “solid gold” or “gold-plated,” might not mean what you think. The markings on platinum jewelry indicate its value. Understanding the terms used to describe jewelry can help you avoid paying too much.

Baubles, beads, or bust? Size can affect the value of gemstones. But, so can whether the stones are natural or lab-created and whether they have undergone treatments to enhance them. If you’re serious about getting that sparkler, learn more about buying gemstones, diamonds, and pearls.
