More than 220,000 kids jewelry kits are being recalled due to hazardous chemical

LaRose Industries is recalling about 224,100 jewelry-making kits that contain a resin which, when liquid, can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation.

Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry kits contain an acrylate that exceeds limits allowed in children’s products by the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Although the resin is harmful as a liquid, when cured, it’s no longer a hazard.

No injuries or incidents related to the jewelry kits have been reported.

The recall involves 10 models of Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry kits and one refill pack. The kits include a resin bottle and a UV setting light to cure the resin. Click here for a listing of item numbers and UPC codes.

The jewelry kits were sold at Target, Marshall’s, T.J. Maxx, and Joann stores, and other retailers nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, and Joann.com from January 2023 through September 2024. The cost was between $13 and $36, depending on the kit.

Consumers should stop using the jewelry making kits immediately and contact LaRose Industries for a refund, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and company advise.
