Usually, I enjoy celebrating July Fourth, the anniversary of what I used to call our great nation.
As a supporter of government after membership in the League of Women Voter for decades and being a candidate for public office and an employee of state government, I’ve urged people on our nation’s birthday to be involved in government by voting, attending meetings and public hearings, running for office, and more.
I also love red, white, and blue and the American flag.
Today, I’m discouraged by the far right’s takeover of the federal government. That President Trump could get his awful big bill passed in time for July Fourth is upsetting. It harms the American people in so many ways. Some deadlines were set so that services, such health insurance, wouldn’t be taken away until after the 2026 election.
Trump and the Republican’s big interest in cutting taxes as a main goal above all else loses sight of the fact that revenue from taxes pays for services that people need – roads, bridges, and schools, for example. His financial policies are putting America on a perilous path.
So many people will be hurt by the far right policies. I’ve said for years that Republicans hate poor people. Now, I think they hate the middle class, too.
What should we do?
Speak up. Continue to attend rallies to protest. Support and vote for officials at all levels of government who oppose Trump and the Republican’s view of government. Continue to be involved government at all levels.
And just hope and pray that you don’t have a natural disaster or health crisis that you could formerly get assistance for, but now, will ruin you financially.
Happy birthday, America, indeed.
