In the past, I’ve written about the mass shootings at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.; at the Century 16 Theater in Aurora, Colorado; at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and at the Clackamas Town Center in Portland, Oregon.
I’ve called for the president to push for gun control, and the need to set up a blue-ribbon panel to figure what’s causing so many mass murders and what needs to be done to stop them. I suggested the panel look at mental illness programs, hate mongering, violent images aimed at children, youth organizations, mass murders in the workplace, and other potential factors that contribute to mass murder.
I said my heart goes out to the families whose loved ones died.
Yet, nothing is happening to stop the senseless killings.
When I heard about the mass murders in Las Vegas on Oct. 1, I turned on my television and watched the news reports on CNN.
I didn’t realize I hadn’t written about it until I received the items from other bloggers in our Best of Boomer Blogs group. I guess I haven’t been able figure out what to say anymore about the senseless killings from gun violence.
Laura Lee Carter of the Adventures of the New Old Farts is thoroughly disgusted with her country when it comes to mass shootings and its apparent inability to do anything to stop them. Carter can only conclude this is our new normal. Is this how the nation wishes to proceed? The NRA owns us, she says.
Meryl Baer of Six Decades and Counting wanted to write a light piece this week. Baer sat down, stared down her computer, but the words didn’t materialize. She finally realized nothing funny, humorous, or amusing happened to her the past few days. And Baer didn’t witness anything funny. All that came to mind was the sorrowful event resulting in deaths and injuries. She contemplates in nothing funny to write the tragedy in Las Vegas and asks if politicians truly believe easy access to guns has nothing to do with the epidemic of mass shootings in this country.

It’s surreal that a 64-year-old wealthy man would do what he did. Most active shooters are in their 20’s and openly angry about something. He didn’t have Vietnam PTSD or any military experience. I’m afraid we’ll never know what his motive was. In the meanwhile, we are sickened by the innocent lives who were lost and damaged for life.
Hi Rebecca,
Yes, this shooting is so horrible. What a terrible thing this man did. If only he would have been able to figure out some other way to deal with what he was angry about.
