Boomers celebrate their love with cards, food, presents

How do baby boomers celebrate Valentine’s Day?

In a 2006 survey, 2,267 adults in a relationship said on Valentine’s Day they would:

  • Exchange cards, 43 percent.
  • Go out to dinner, 33 percent.
  • Exchange gifts, 28 percent.
  • Cook a romantic dinner, 18 percent.
  • Go to a movie or the theater, 9 percent.
  • Go to a party, dance, or special event, 3 percent.
  • Have dinner cooked for them, 1 percent.
  • Have quiet time at home, 3 percent.
  • Have a weekend away, 2 percent.
  • Make love, 2 percent.
  • No special plans, 32 percent.
  • Something else, 2 percent.
  • Undecided, 1 percent.

These results surprised me. I thought more boomers would be going out to dinner for Valentine’s Day and exchanging presents. How about you? What are your plans with your partner?

The survey also indicated that 20 percent of the baby boomers surveyed said they would spent more than $76 on a gift.

Respondents were able to select more than one answer to the survey question listed above. The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive, with eHarmony.

Tomorrow on Unlocking The Power of Your Money I’ll offer suggestions on how to select books for gifts, and I’ll post a list of books about love. I like to give and receive books for gifts.

Wednesday, I’ll have tips for singles on Valentine’s Day.

On Thursday, the big day for lovers, I’ll offer some tips from one of my favorite books about getting joy.
