Medical King recalls 220,000 portable adult bed rails after a death, the 9th recall of bed rails involving 18 deaths in 3 years

Consumers need to be aware that adult bed rails can be a hazard for older adults. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued its ninth recall in three years of adult portable bed rails. There have been 18 deaths involving bed rails in the recalls.

The latest recall is by Medical King, which is recalling about 222,000 adult bed rails.

The bed rails pose a risk of entrapment and asphyxia because users can become entrapped within the rail, or between the rail and mattress.

Medical King has received one report of a death involving the Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights, model number 7007. In November 2023, at a residential care facility in South Carolina, a 66-year-old man died after becoming entrapped between his mattress and the bed rail.

The recalled model numbers are 7007, 7057, and 7037.

The bed rails have no brand-specific labeling. Medical King says the easiest way to tell if your bed rail is impacted by the recall is to check receipts or purchase history.

Medical King sold the recalled bed rails from January 2020 through March 2024. The cost was about $40.

The recalled bed rails were sold online at Amazon.com, Walmart.com, Target Plus, eBay, Kohls.com, and medicalkingusa.com.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Medical King for a free repair kit or a replacement bed rail, depending on the model, the company and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advise.
