Today is Flag Day, which commemorates the adoption of the American flag.
To me, the U.S. flag stands for democracy. As a supporter of the government and a belief that everyone should participate in our government to make it the best it can be, I find it upsetting that so many conservatives hate government and are teaching others, especially children, to hate it.
Flag Day is a good day to figure out what you can do to make your nation and community better. Here are 10 ways to make it so:
- Join a good government group such as the League of Women Voters, Common Cause, or Public Citizen.
- Volunteer for groups that are working on providing food and shelter for those in need.
- Call a school and see what you can do to help.
- Do the research and donate to charities that make a difference.
- Be kind in your daily dealings with people, co-workers, family, and friends.
- Sign up to work on a political campaign.
- Don’t say racist things to people.
- Follow what’s happening in government at all levels – city, county, state, and federal – and make your voice heard.
- Participate peacefully in marches and demonstrations.
- Run for public office.
Best wishes to you and the country in these endeavors. I hope those of us who have goodwill can outlast the hate-mongers.
