While it’s great to support your favorite small business on Small Business Saturday, there’s no need to break your holiday shopping budget in the process.
Here are some tips to help you save money today as you shop:
- Check your list of holiday purchases to see which ones you may be able to buy at your favorite small shops.
- Go to the website of small shops in your area to see what might be on sale. When I checked one out that I thought I might go to, it had a blouse on sale for $125. I’ll skip that one.
- Take a look at the website of your downtown association, where small shops are often located, to see if there are any new stores you may want to visit today.
- Ask your friends what are their favorite small shops and why.
- Don’t be tempted to buy yourself an expensive treat. Keep it inexpensive so you don’t go over your holiday spending budget.
Small Business Saturday, created by American Express, has generated more than $220 billion for independent retailers, restaurants, and service-based businesses since it began in 2010.
“With the economy rebounding from forty-year high inflation, there’s never been a better time to shop small in support of local businesses,” Kelly Loeffler, administrator of the Small Business Administration, said in a statement. “Small businesses employ half of the private sector workforce and generate nearly half of GDP – which means that when we as consumers take part in Small Business Saturday, we’re investing in the workers and job creators who power our own communities.”
Have fun shopping on Small Business Saturday. I’m headed to downtown Olympia to see what I can find. I’ll probably end up at The Wayside Café for a vegan treat.
