General Motors is recalling about 1.3 million vehicles because a sudden loss of electric power steering assist could occur at any time when the vehicles are being driven.
The vehicles involved include the Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2006 and 2008-2009; Malibu Maxx, 2004-2006; HHR (non-turbo), 2009-2010; Cobalt, 2010; Saturn Aura, 2008-2009; Ion, 2004-2007; and Pontiac G6, 2005-2009.
If power steering assist is lost, drivers need to use more effort to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
General Motors said parts aren’t currently available. It expects to send an interim notice about April 28.
When parts are available, owners will be mailed a second letter.

The total number of vehicles General Motors has recalled since February, including this recall, is now 6.1 million.
