It’s difficult to figure out what to say on Labor Day 2018. With President Trump slashing consumer protections and workers’ rights almost daily, one could get depressed.
But the good thing I’m thinking about today is the years I’ve worked and what good career opportunities I’ve had. Ten years as a consumer journalist working as a freelance writer and for four newspapers in the West. Nearly 20 years working for state government as a writer and planner. And my latest job, as a consumer journalist writing for two blogs for 10 years.
As a state worker, my union helped me when I had problems with supervisors. That help enabled me to work long enough to get a pension, which is important now to my quality of life.
When I was a young woman, I had such hope for America after the Women’s Movement, Civil Rights Movement, and Consumer Movement were launched. I thought life would continue to improve as we moved toward equality for all and expanding consumer rights.
Instead, here we are today. We have a president who is a liar and a racist. The election should have been over when he said he could grab women’s private parts because he was famous. He has a large enough following that he could be elected under the antiquated Electoral College system and with help from, of all things, the Russians.
But, as I wrote earlier, I think it will be all over soon. The Manafort-Cohen Tuesday was a great day.
Today, I attended the Labor Day picnic in my area. I had my picture taken with a man who predicts “A Big Blue Wave.” Yes, I agree. I think it’s coming.
