Consumer champions recognized at awards ceremony for outstanding work on behalf of consumers

A governor, a congresswoman, and two citizen activists have received awards from the National Consumers League, or NCL, for their work as consumer champions.

Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO; Debbie Dingell, congresswoman, D-Ann Arbor; and Mike DeWine, Ohio governor received the Trumpeter Award for speaking out on social justice issues and the rights of consumers.

Mónica Ramírez, Justice for Migrant Women founder and president received the Florence Kelley Award, named for NCL’s first general secretary, who fought child labor and exploitative working conditions and championed minimum-wage protections.

“Consumers are facing enormous challenges, from rising costs and weakened protections to threats to the safety and security of their families,” Sally Greenberg, CEO of the NCL, an advocacy group, said in a statement. “At a time when it can be easy to feel discouraged, our 2026 honorees remind us of what strong leadership looks like.”

Greenberg said the award winners have spent their careers standing up for fairness, accountability, and justice.

The awards were presented at the annual Trumpeter Awards Dinner in early October at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.
