It’s time to take a look at last week’s recalls. Keeping an eye on recalls could help save you or a family member from an injury or even death. For example, children’s products are recalled frequently, more than twice a week, according to KID, Kids in Danger. That means about 100 children’s products recalled each year.
In 2013, I attended the opening of a Trader Joe’s store in Olympia, Washington. My friends, who traveled to Lakewood to shop at a store there, and other friends were buzzing about it. I was surprised that the store was small, and the vegetables were all shrink wrapped. And, only about a quarter of the fruits and vegetables were organic.

Accompany USA is recalling about 25,000 ceramic mugs with cork bottoms. The company has received one report of the mug breaking after hot liquid was poured into it. No injuries have been reported. The mugs were sold online or given out for free as promotional products with company or other logos.
Pesticides were found at detectable levels in dozens of fruit leather strips and dried fruit samples, according to new EWG testing. These two fruit treats are among the most popular kids’ snacks. The tests were conducted by an independent laboratory on 37 samples of organic and conventional fruit leather from 10 well-known brands.
Recently, I received a package with a sheet of plastic in it that said “Micro-Pak Enhanced PE Sheets.” Wondering what it was, I saved it. Micro-Pak Enhanced PE Sheets are intended to control, inhibit, and mitigate odor causing bacteria, mold, and mildew on products enclosed in packaging intended for shipment.
It’s a wonderful time of year. My garden is in full production. I grew up on apple ranches in Central Washington. We always has a big garden. Nothing beats corn, green beans, and strawberries straight from the garden. As usual, my raised bed garden is a great producer.
The EPA said Friday it will designate the two most commonly detected toxic “forever chemicals” – chemicals found in cookware, fast food wrappers, stain-resistant furniture and carpets, water-repellant clothing, and cosmetics that have been linked to cancer and other health problems – as hazardous substances.
