It’s a tough year for American workers. Millions of jobs have been lost due to the covid-19 pandemic.
The United States has more coronavirus cases and deaths than any country in the world – 6.29 million cases and 189,000 deaths.
An inadequate response from the federal government means health care workers have gone and are going without adequate PPE and there isn’t enough testing. In addition, retail and restaurant workers, who work for low wages, put themselves in danger every day because they can’t afford to miss a paycheck.
The jobs that put workers at risk the most from the coronavirus are healthcare support services, healthcare practitioners and technical professionals, protective services, personal care and services, and community and social services.
If we listened to the president and vice president, we’d think the pandemic is about over. However, I agree with those who say the worst is yet to come.
One way to remember workers who have died due to the coronavirus is to go to the website Worker’s Memorial Wall.
It offers a place to mourn and remember lost co-workers and friends due to the pandemic. It offers stories of some of the lives already lost.
I hope you’ll stay as close to home today, and that you’ll have a safe Labor Day.
