About 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between May 21-25 for the Memorial Day holiday, a forecast that sets a new record and is slightly higher than 2025, according to AAA Travel projections.
About 39.1 million are expected to drive and 3.66 million are expected to fly to their destinations, which is around 8 percent of those traveling.
Other modes of transportation are expected to increase this year as well, including travel by bus, train, or cruise over the holiday weekend, AAA Travel estimates.
Where will these travelers be headed?
To find out, I reviewed more than three dozen websites to determine what the top Memorial Day destinations are this year. My findings are:
- Washington, D.C.
- Charleston, S.C.
- San Diego
- Lake Tahoe
- Austin, Texas
- Orlando
- Las Vegas
- Tie: Boston and Chicago
- Tie: Denver and Palm Springs, Calif.
- Tie: Miami and Nashville
Best wishes with your travels whether you’re visiting or live near one for these top cities for celebrating Memorial Day or you’re traveling elsewhere.
