What to buy and not buy in November

It’s time to make a list of what you want to buy at Black Friday sales in November, which has the best sales of the year.

It’s also time to make your holiday shopping list. If you can snare a lot of bargains for gifts, your pocketbook will be happy as well as you.

And, in both cases, compare price continually. As I’ve written about many times, sales may be terrific or sale items may be “marked way up and marked way down.” When I worked for The Anchorage Times years ago, I ran into Gordon Miller, manager of JCPenney’s store, who I went to grade school with, when I was doing interviews. He said the phrase, which I’ve quoted many times throughout the years.

Also, begin your research now. Black Friday sales are already underway.

Here’s what Nerdwallet, a personal finance website, suggests concentrating your Black Friday shopping on:

Electronics

Look for markdowns on television sets, tablets, laptops, cameras, smartwatches, and smartphones

Vacuums

If you need a new vacuum cleaner, Black Friday sales are likely to offer good deals.

Air fryers and coffee makers

You’re likely to find good prices on these appliances throughout November. It may be better to wait until Cyber Monday, which is on Dec. 1, for other small appliances.

Items to skip in November include bedding and linens, strollers, and specialty food items.

On Veterans Day, ask about military discounts if you serve or have served in the military.

Happy shopping at the hottest sales of the year.
