Redken 5th Avenue NYC is recalling about 1 million spray mousse foam cans.
The aerosol container's liner can corrode over time, posing a risk of the cans rupturing and expelling its contents, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in an announcement made in cooperation with Redken.
Redken has received 41 reports of cans rupturing. No injuries have been reported.
The recall involves Redken Guts 10 Volume Spray Mousse Foam sold in 10.58- and 2-ounce size cans.
The hair styling product was sold in a silver container with black writing. "Redken" and "10" are printed on the front of the product. The product can be identified by a lot code printed on the bottom of the can. Lot codes included in this recall include:
- Any can with lot codes that don’t contain a G or H as the third digit.
- Any can with the following lot codes: 32G10Y, 32G11Y, 32G20Y, 32G21Y, 32G23Y, 32G40Y, 32G41Y, 32G60Y, 32G61Y, 32G62Y, and 32G70Y.
Manufactured in United States, the mousse was sold at hair salons and beauty supply stores nationwide from January 1998 through February 2011 for $4 to $16.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled mousse, record the product's lot code, and discard the contents by spraying it into a waste container in a well-ventilated area, the commission advises. Consumers should then contact Redken for information on receiving a refund.
For additional information, call Redken at 888-241-9504 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's website at www.redken.com.

I had to bookmark this site, its awesome!
I had can in the cabinet under the bathroom sink and it exploded throwing everything else out onto the floor and breaking the drain pipe of the sink. This happened at 3:45 AM and sounded like a gunshot, not something to wake up to.
Hi Mary,
I’m sorry you didn’t learn about the recall in time. Be sure to file a complaint with the company so you can recoup some of your expenses.
Rita
This just happened at my house last night. The Guts mousse can exploded sounded like a gun shot.Threw products out my bathroom cabinet doors, mousse all over including on my glass shower door.Very scary! If you have this product I would throw away immediately! I Google it last night. This makes 42 cans!
Hi Beth,
Wow. Thanks for writing about this. Be sure to file a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. And tell your friends about it. A lot of people don’t learn about recalls, even the big ones like this.
