Freeze raspberries and other tips for dealing with increasing food prices

I love raspberries. They’re one of my favorite foods.

Fortunately, I have a raspberry patch and often get about 20 pints of raspberries every year.

The wholesale price of fresh berries has doubled since January, according to an article in The New York Times.

The Iran war has increased the cost of gas and oil, with the price of  fuel diesel fuel going up 35 percent in one month.

Berries are often the item where consumers first notice fuel inflation, the article says.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture now is estimating that food costs could go up 6 percent this year.

The Times article quotes Catessia McGee, a mother and regular berry shopper, who decided to buy a 16-ounce container of organic strawberries for $4.99 instead of raspberries.

Not necessary. Raspberries freeze well. Put the raspberries in a single layer on a baking pan or large plate to freeze them. Then put them in a clean canning jar.

The next time I go to Costco, which has the best berries in my area, I’m going buy a lot of raspberries. Blueberries freeze well, too.

About two weeks ago, I recommend that people stock up on nonperishable food because prices would be going up in about a month. It’s beginning to happen, so buy more canned and packaged food if you can squeeze it into your finances and have room to store it.

Two other tips, which also are right on, are:

  • Consider making large purchases, appliances or a car, soon if they’re in your spending plan. Memorial Day and July Fourth sales are coming up.
  • Buy air tickets sooner rather than later. Book now, travel advisors are recommending.

See my article for other money tips on what to do with your finances due to the Iran war such as review your budget, increase the size of your emergency fund, and decrease spending including on gas.

Belt tightening is needed as a recession is a real risk if the Iran war continues another month, economists are now predicting.
