One of the articles in our blogging roundup stands out this week.

Tom Sightings of Sightings Over Sixty described how he fell while playing golf. He climbed up onto the tee box, and without thinking about it, stepped onto a wet railroad tie. His feet shot out from under him, and boom.

Next thing he knew he was on the ground, lying on his left side, his head swimming and leg screaming pain.

The next day, his swollen, black-and-blue thigh looked like it had a football attached to it.

The experience reminded Sightings, and me, too, about how falls can be extremely serious, even life-threatening. If you break something and are laid up for a time, it's extremely difficult to work your way back – if you come back at all.

Sometimes a fall or a series of falls, means an older adult can no longer live independently.

One out of five falls causes serious injury such as a broken bone or head injury, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Each year more than 3 million older people are treated in emergency rooms for fall-related injuries. More than 95 percent of hip fractures are caused by falls.

Other bloggers in our group are writing about:

  • How to go about dating when you’re an older adult.
  • Consumer complaints on the coronavirus growing to more than 200,000, with a total of more than $140 million in fraud losses.
  • The history of the International Day of Peace.
  • How to view the infirmities of aging as part of the “dance of life.”
  • There’s nothing more frustrating than tossing and turning as you watch the clock digits move slowly.
